Summertime is a great time to indulge in a hobby. Some people garden, others do little things to fix up the house, still others play softball, that kind of thing. My summer hobby consisted of attempting to get in the Batman movie. Whenever I had the chance I'd mosey over to Oakland or Downtown and join the throngs hoping the camera zipped past them, if even for just a second. I'll let you in on a little secret--behind every radio person is a movie star just dying to get out!
Sadly, the Batcircus finally left town, and I'm guessing if my mug actually got on film it'll wind up on the ol' cutting room floor. However, the coming fall has its own set of fun activities. Just ask this guy.

I've gone through my fair share of Steelers garb in my life, haven't come across too many Black and Gold kilts! It's a bold statement, but one I'll appreciate from afar. It gets a little breezy in the Heinz Field parking lot for me to sport that look at the tailgate.

On paper you'd think the Steelers are in great shape this season, but I think Coach Tomlin faces the biggest test of his career so far--getting his team to shake off the Super Bowl hangover. It's been a while since we lost a Super Bowl (which is nice), but last time it happened the Steelers were barely a blip the following postseason. Hopefully the old guard, guys like Hines Ward and Aaron Smith, have enough in the tank for one more successful run.
Meanwhile, the change in the weather means that concerts start moving back indoors. The Foo Fighters show over at Consol Energy Center is high on my to-do list, especially coming off their big win at the MTV Video Music Awards for Best Rock Video. I know what you're thinking--MTV doesn't even really play videos anymore. Point taken, but it's still a cool video.
Remember to check out Bob's Shows either here or on Facebook for all the best headliners coming to the 'Burgh. I've got your smaller bands and lots of other great events covered, too. Just click a date on Bob's Calendar to get started!

Pittsburgh's always been thick with sports, but the last month has been particularly so. I identify two major reasons. One--the Pirates get next year's first round draft pick. Two--We've got an Arena team!
But seriously, how about the Steelers' hot start? Props to Homestead Charlie Batch for helping pick up the team in a tough spot. So long as Troy Polamalu doesn't have to cash in that million dollar insurance policy for his hair, I think the team will be just fine.
Meanwhile, Consol Energy Center seems to have given the fans new, well, energy! It's early, but the Pens look good, too. I don't know if they look good enough for me to want to catch hypothermia watching them play the Caps at Heinz Field, not that those tickets lasted five seconds anyway!
Of course, this all means that the summer concert season is a faint memory. But speaking of the Consol Energy Center, there are some great acts coming to break in the new place. As always, hop on over to Bob's Shows to keep up!

Those crazy days in the 80's earlier in April got me thinking about summertime and all it represents--lazy days in front of my grill, baseball games, and of course a bunch of great concerts. Right around now is when all the big acts get their tours finalized, and as you can see over on the Bob's Show's page, there's plenty to choose from! That being said, if you're like me you tend to glaze over when staring at a big list of anything! Still, I powered through and picked out a handful of shows that I can't wait to see in the coming months!

Every year we get a great multi-band classic rock tour, this time around it's Styx, Foreigner, and Kansas. In particular, Styx is still rocking hard as ever. Last time I saw them was at Mellon Arena, and women still throw their undergarments at Tommy Shaw. Foreigner put on a great show at PNC Park last year, and Kansas is always an intriguing live band, too.

JT and Carole King are calling this the Troubadour Reunion Tour, which refers to a one-off gig they played together some 40 years ago. If I remember right they're playing in the round on this tour, which improves every seat in the house. Anytime two hall-of-fame singer-songwriters get together like this you know it'll be special.

Pop Quiz: When was the last time BB King played Pittsburgh? I have no idea, either. All the more reason to check out BB and Lucille this summer, especially since he's playing at the Amphitheatre at Station Square. Unlike the far-flung First Niagara Pavilion, when I check out a show at Station Square I can let the Port Authority be the designated driver.

As Tom said once when he played this venue (under a different name!), "To all you people on the grass, we love ya." You can bet I'll be on the lawn for this show. Tom and company will be touring behind their first new album in a dog's age, Mojo.

As far as I can tell, Lady Gaga's visit to Pittsburgh will be my first trip to the brand-new Consol Energy Center. That means there will be two spectacles going on--the wonder and promise of a new arena, and the wonder and promise of Lady Gaga. I have to give her credit--her European show was so over the top with costume changes, multiple dancers, and elaborate staging that she barely made any money. I respect any artist who puts the show above profit!
There are lots of other awesome shows happening this summer, big and small. I'll be working diligently to keep up with everything, I hope you make this website your first stop when you're planning your summer outings.
Speaking of the website, I hope you enjoy the new look we've given it. The redesign is the culmination of lots and lots of work from everybody here at the station, and we're thrilled it's finally here! You'll notice over on the Jocks' Page we shot some introductory videos of everyone. I was mean enough to keep all the best bloopers and put them together for you, enjoy!

I held out as long as I could, but finally flicked on the furnace for the first time this week, which means it’s time to get ready for Halloween! Why do they sell Halloween candy in September, anyway? If you were a kid would you want someone’s month-old fun size Snickers?
Of course, there’s lots more to Halloween than handing out candy at the door. I always make it out to at least one or two haunted houses every year, and here are just a few of my favorites (in no particular order):

That’s just a little sampling of some of my favorites, I put together an interactive map with a bunch more!

I don’t know about you, but that little whiff of 60 degree weather gave me hope that eventually this nasty winter we’re having might actually end. Of course, if you believe that groundhog up in Punxatawney (and I do), we still have a ways to go.
Hang in there, everyone! I’ve come up with a list of five ways to beat the winter blahs!

I’ll be the first to admit it, skiing comes to me about as easily as telepathy. Park my keister in a tube though, and I’m good to go. Boyce Park has tubing most days and nights, too!

Christie McVie is sitting out the Unleashed tour, but I’m sure the band will puzzle it out without her. Besides, I’ll be able to train my undivided attention to one of my biggest 80’s crushes, Stevie Nicks. The March 1st show is also notable because Fleetwood Mac chose to kick off their tour right here in Pittsburgh!

The description of this one off the Cultural Trust website is priceless: ”A sculptural sound installation featuring a new compilation of original Ramones material remixed by the artist.” A Ramones sculpture? Why not?

This is one of those “You had me at hello” kind of shows. I love the Beatles, I love laser beams. It’s a no-brainer, and it’s only eight bucks!

Was I the only guy who thought some of those women curlers in the last Winter Olympics where pretty hot? Ever since then I’ve been fascinated by this sport of rocks, brooms, and yelling. For just $10 you can take a “learn to curl” class, which gives you all the basics.
That’s just a partial list, if you have any suggestions I’d love to hear them. In the meantime hang in there—only a few more weeks until we’re back to Daylight Savings Time!

Holiday momentum is building all over the city, especially as Light Up Night approaches. With almost a quarter million people expected to flood downtown, it’s almost like Woodstock in Pittsburgh! For me the big Light Up Night highlights are the tree lighting, the Macy’s window unveiling, and of course the fireworks at the Point (after hundreds of fireworks shows in this town you’d think I’d be burned out by now, but I still love them!).
Right on the heels of Light Up Night, of course, is Thanksgiving. Last year the house got turned inside out by relatives. I love having family over and everything, but I must have washed 300 dishes, sopped up dozens of spilled beverages, and refereed a particularly cutthroat family game of Monopoly. This year I laid down the law and suggested we go out to eat instead. The response was surprising positive and quick. Maybe too quick—now I’m paranoid no one liked my cooking last year. Hey—pierogies are a legitimate substitute for mashed potatoes, right?
If you’re thinking ahead and want to try to score some cool stocking stuffers be sure to hit up the Win With Bob page. I’ll be sure to keep it fully stocked for you procrastinators out there!

I have mixed feelings about August. Sure, the weather’s as good as it gets around here, and my perennial Pirates dismay parlays into Steelers anticipation, but there’s no getting around it—summer’s definitely winding down.
Hopefully you got a chance to catch some of this year’s Mellon Square Concert Series. There were a lot of highlights, especially the Sun Kings and B.U.M. B.U.M got off the line of the summer when they quipped that B.U.M. stands for “Butt Ugly Men” (for the record, B.U.M. refers to their names—Bruce, Utah, and Marty). They’re not so bad, are they?

That said the most consistent performer of the series had to be the hot dog guy who sets up behind our canopy. The line for his stand is always a dozen or two deep, but definitely worth the wait!
This fall is weirder than most as it’s fast becoming silly season in politics. I guess everyone’s tearing into each other over their dueling energy policies. Even Paris Hilton’s getting in on the act:
No doubt about it, the topic of gas prices isn’t going away anytime soon. I’m as frustrated over it as anyone (You try gassing up the Bob FM van sometime!), and I intend to do something about it. I don’t want to say exactly what just yet, let’s just say I’ve got my own solution to high gas prices, and with a little luck you’ll reap the benefits!
Be sure to take a minute to request a song today. It’s really easy—just click a link here or click the Request a Song button over on the right! After you submit your request listen in the mornings for your song! Easy!

Tickets for the first Stanley Cup games at Mellon Arena in 16 years sold out in about 14 seconds, I think. I had everything all logged in and ready to go at 10AM, but when the time came I completely whiffed. I’m not as much a fan of camping out for tickets as I used to be, it’s almost an anachronism now in this online era. I will say camping out with other Pens fans probably would have been more fun than hollering at my monitor to cough up some tickets. At least I can console myself with the $125 I unintentionally saved.
The other big thing in my orbit right now is my Coke Zero 400 contest. The idea is to send you and a friend down to the Daytona International Speedway. You know, this little slice of heaven:

That’s the grand prize, of course. But 30 winners will get a really cool NASCAR prize pack, so definitely enter soon—you’ve got until Friday, May 30th!
While you’re at it, make it a habit to check out that Win With Bob page. I’m constantly bringing in new contests with fun stuff you can win, and it’s always super easy to enter!

Winning a bracket competition is no small thing. It helps to follow college basketball all season, you’d do well to do some research, and of course there’s plenty of luck thrown in. Everything came together for the man who calls himself “TheIceHole” (I assume it’s a man, would a lady call herself something like “TheIceHole”?). TheIceHole fought off 200 players to win my Bracket Challenge, congratulations!
TheIceHole has some really great stuff coming to him--a Coleman Portable Perfect Flow 2 Burner Stove, Coleman Extreme Cooler on Wheels, All Clad Grilling Utensils, and a $200 Foodland certificate! He’ll be the envy of the neighborhood!
Speaking of envy, here’s how Steve, John, and Matt fared against me in the Bracket Challenge standings:

Thanks to everyone who played—I hope you had as much fun as we did!

With the warmer weather comes my favorite time of year—concert season! It’s been a hectic few weeks as more and more shows are being announced. You can keep up with them over on the Bob’s Shows page, or on the Calendar, both of which are rigorously updated.
With most of this spring and summer’s show’s lined up I thought it would be fun to share the five I’m most looking forward to seeing! Here they are in chronological order:

It’s hard to overstate the Murphy’s Law attitude around here when word got out that the Diamond Dave tour ran aground and all those dates got pushed back. All the intrigue and tension only add to the anticipation, but I bet I won’t be the only one breathing a sigh of relief when (if?) these guys finally hit the arena stage.

I have a feeling the tailgate scene at this one will be one of the more memorable of the year. That jangly outlaw country sound makes for a great time, and these guys will keep it coming for hours. I will say I hope Hank gets that Monday Night Football song out of the way early in his set.

Tom Petty is about to put out an album with his first band, Mudcrutch. I’ve got high hopes one or two of those songs make it into his set. Steve Winwood is always amazing in concert, and while the tour I’m waiting for is a Steve Winwood/Eric Clapton quasi-Blind Faith reunion, I’ll take Stevie on his own anytime.

This show has so much going for it! It’s outside on a Saturday night, and aside from whatever obligatory new stuff they’ll play, I know every song by both these guys. Joe Cocker says he quit smoking and has been gargling Listerine, so even if he can’t hit the high notes of years past, at least he’ll smell a lot better!

After stumbling a little out of the gate, the Police have barnstormed all over the world. According to Sting this tour is it for the Police, they’re only going to play about a half dozen more shows after Burgettstown—that’s about as hot a ticket as you can get!
Remember—check out the Bob’s Shows page to keep up with the big headliners. You’ll find lots more upcoming concerts and other events on the calendar, too! See you at the shows!

Everyone here at the station is saddened by Myron Cope’s passing, and our thoughts go out to his family and friends who knew him best. I can’t begin to match the eloquence you’ll find in other tributes to Myron, but I want to share what I liked best about him. Lots of credit goes to Arlin’s Myron Cope Sounds page, which is a great place to hang out if all this has you down.
Like so many of us, my strongest memories of Myron come from that voice blasting out of my speakers every Sunday with the TV turned down. That wasn’t lost on him:
It was always a little dangerous listening to Myron calling Steelers games, because beer could shoot out of your nose at almost any time. I found him funniest when he’d get all fired up and start flinging words at the wall to see what stuck.
Of course, one of Myron’s biggest legacies is the concept of the Terrible Towel. I’ve got a massive collection of them—I always forget to bring one to the game, so I wind up buying one on site. I’m intimately familiar with this sensation:
Myron Cope was an accomplished writer and broadcaster. However, the theme to his interview show, “Cope’s Cabana”, left no doubt that he wasn’t much of a crooner:
Speaking of Cope’s Cabana, I just love this clip where he’s trying to ascertain the gender of an exotic bird some handlers from the Aviary brought on the show:
As sad as I am to hear about Myron’s passing, I always chuckle a little when I think of him. Everyone in this city who works on the radio feels his influence, and that spirit of uniqueness and irreverence is a big part of Bob FM. Goodbye Myron, and thanks for everything!

Plaxico Burress, Big Ben’s former neighbor, may have given us the most audacious pre-Super Bowl prediction in 40 years. In case you missed it, he said his Giants would beat the Patriots 23-17, despite New England being favored by 11.5 points. The rest is history. Steelers or no, at least the game was pretty good and the Patriots lost!
As commercials go, this was one of the best Super Bowls in a while. Helpfully, there’s a whole Myspace page dedicated to all the ads. I had three favorites, cashew-loving Unibrow Lady, Alice Cooper/Richard Simmons caught in the headlights, and of course, Bob’s House:
Let me know if you thought I left out any goodies. Admittedly I zoned out a little until the fourth quarter. I bet you did, too—the 30 minutes without any scoring was a Super Bowl record!
Congratulations to Dennis McMahon, and thanks to everyone who entered the Lynyrd Skynyrd/Hank Williams Who Needs 10 contest! We have plenty of other stuff on the Win With Bob page, so start grabbing some prizes!

It’s been pretty busy around here lately. I have lots to tell you about, but first I absolutely have to share something. In honor of Van Halen’s upcoming Mellon Arena show, here’s David Lee Roth’s vocals on “Runnin’ With the Devil” with all the instruments removed:
Speaking of concerts—Eddie Money’s playing the Carnegie Music Hall of Homestead on the 1st, John Nene scored a great interview with the former police officer:
I’ve also got tickets to see Bon Jovi’s March 5th show, and coolest of all—I’m giving away 10 tickets and a big tailgate for the May 17th Lynyrd Skynyrd/Hank Williams Jr. show!
Start registering to win all this stuff! Good luck, and talk to you later!

You’d think with all the music I’ve got stashed away that picking 2,008 songs is a breeze, right? What surprised me was how many songs didn’t make the cut. One thing I learned about myself after this process is that I have a 2,009th favorite song. I hesitate to say just what it is so that no one’s feelings are hurt!
A fun little mental exercise we had in the office involved counting up all the songs in the A to Z by artist. The singer with the most songs in the A to Z on B-O-B, with just over 1% of the total?

That’s right—23 songs worth of Sir Elton John himself! I love that picture—it totally reinforces the rumor that Elton had a rule against looking him in the eye backstage at his shows. He’s since denied that rumor, but his other backstage demands are pretty funny.
I sure hope everyone had as much fun listening to the A to Z as I had putting it together. Thanks for all the emails—it was really cool to kick off 2008 with an overflowing inbox! Here are a couple of my favorites:
Happy new year to the best station ever. The idea of playing songs from a to z is fantastic. I started listening yesterday and every hour I have my radio on just for this program. Keep up the great work all year round!

The A-Z on the B- O- B! You have cured my bitter music face- now I smile, sing, and dance all day long. I love you, BOB!

The pressure’s on to find those uniquely Pittsburgh gifts for the out of town relatives who have no idea what they’re missing here in the ‘Burgh. There’s a bunch of funny stuff at BurghLines.com, this bumper sticker is my favorite:
